In an ever-evolving landscape dominated by rapid technological advancements and sociopolitical changes, the role of private investigators in society is more crucial than ever. In 2005, recognizing this necessity, Harvey Morse and his nephew, Ari Morse, took a pioneering step to acquire the abandoned name of the Florida Association of Private Investigators (FAPI), which had ceased operations years ago. This effort asserted the principles of integrity, responsibility, and equality within the private investigative industry. Their mission was to create a unified front that would serve private investigators in Florida and elsewhere and protect the profession’s interests as a whole.
FAPI's journey began with a seminal gathering on International Drive in Orlando. The meeting attracted over fifty investigators from various areas of Florida. This initial congregation was more than just a reunion; it was a declaration of unity among private investigators who had long been working in isolation or who sought a new path to enhance themselves and their businesses. By electing the first board of directors, in which Harvey was President and Ari was Vice-President, they charted a clear path forward, and the members of this new organization laid the groundwork for a future built on collaboration and mutual support. The significance of this event cannot be understated; it sowed the seeds for what would grow into a powerful advocate for the profession, including voluntary education, listserve, trainings, and annual conferences that has brought international attendance.
However, the road was fraught with challenges. Soon after FAPI's initial gathering, the organization faced a considerable threat in the form of potentially dangerous and restrictive legislation proposed in Tallahassee. This pivotal moment tested the resolve and commitment of the private investigation community. Harvey and Ari Morse's swift reaction exemplified their leadership and dedication to their espoused principles. They rallied the investigative community, inspiring hundreds of private investigators across Florida to take a stand. Through organized lobbying efforts, letter-writing campaigns, and direct conversations with state representatives, senators, and even the governor, FAPI demonstrated the power of collective action. It showed that when united by a common purpose, individual voices can create meaningful change.
The spirit of unity FAPI fostered during this period remains a hallmark of the organization. The collaborative response to legislative threats was not merely a reactionary measure but a proactive embrace of the shared mission that Harvey and Ari envisioned. By focusing on integrity and responsibility, FAPI developed a platform advocating for the private investigation profession in Florida and other states. This approach resonated with many in the field, who recognized the importance of a professional association that represented their interests and epitomized the values they aspired to in their daily work.
Today, FAPI continues to uphold the principles established by its founders. The emphasis on integrity, responsibility, and equality is evident in its ongoing training programs, legislative advocacy, and networking opportunities that connect private investigators statewide and worldwide. By fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support, FAPI equips its members with the tools and resources they need to navigate the complexities of the profession.
Harvey brought his legal and law enforcement background to the private sector and to FAPI. He served on state licensing boards and was a state Hearing Officer and the Chair for ten consecutive years of the Florida Private Security Advisory Council. Ari follows in Harvey’s footsteps while creating his own investigative path and is a member of Florida’s PSAC successor association, now known as PIRSAC. Both serve on the boards of other investigative and civic organizations in multiple capacities.
In conclusion, the Florida Association of Private Investigators stands as a testament to the power of collective action and shared values within the private investigative industry. Through their hard work, personal financial investments and commitment to integrity, responsibility, and equality, they have significantly shaped the landscape for private investigators in Florida. As the organization continues to evolve, its foundation remains rooted in the principles that brought it to life, serving as a beacon of unity and professionalism. FAPI's legacy is one of continued advocacy and empowerment, illustrating the impact that a dedicated community of skilled investigators can have when they come together for a common cause and welcomes all private investigators to join, participate and become an active part of the FAPI FAMILY.
